YOUTH MUSIC CAMP
Welcome
to Cazadero.
Since 1957, our camp has been providing the best in musical education
and performances to youngsters from the Bay Area and beyond. The camp is in an old growth redwood grove approximately
two hours from the Bay Area. In these beautiful surroundings, lives
are changed forever through music making, recreation and friendship.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Major Ensembles: Orchestra, Concert Band, and Jazz Band
While at Caz, campers can particpate in one of the three major ensembles: orchestra, concert band, or jazz ensemble. Led by a new conductor each week, major ensembles rehearse twice a day for 60-90 minutes at a time.
During the one-week, Young Musicians Session, only orchestra and concert band are offered as major ensembles. Orchestra is comprised of strings only; all woodwinds, brass, and percussion are placed in concert band. Jazz ensemble is available as an optional, one-hour, daily elective. During the one-to two-week Middle School Sessions or the two-week Junior High and High School Sessions, woodwinds, brass and percussion may participate in either jazz ensemble or orchestra for one-week.
Ensemble placement is based on ability, instrumental needs, and conductor criteria. Placements are determined by an audition on the first day of camp. Campers should come prepared to play a short piece in each genre that interests them. Audition choices should demonstrate accomplishments in tone, range and technique. Campers will also be asked to sight-read and play scales.
Individual Instruments: Strings, Winds, Brass, and Percussion
Each successive session at Caz represents a more advanced level of musical ability. Specific instrumental requirements for each session are described in detail on the registration form (click here). Campers must have their music teachers read and sign this form to confirm that the requested session is appropriate for the camper's musical ability.
Piano Program
Piano is offered as a primary instrument and as an elective in all sessions. The piano program includes individual coaching as well as participation in chamber ensembles. Acceptance for piano as a primary instrument is by audition only. There is an additional $125 lab fee for the piano program. Click here for details or call the Cazadero office at 510-527-7500.
Guitar Program
The guitar program is primarily for acoustic guitar and is offered in the Middle School, Junior High, and High School sessions only. The guitar program at Cazadero is designed with the skills of its participants in mind; a foundation in classical technique is preferred. First time applicants may be asked to submit an audition tape to help guarantee placement in the most appropriate session. Click here for details or call the Cazadero office at 510-527-7500.
At camp, music will be played solo, in guitar ensemble, and in mixed chamber ensembles. We will work primarily on acoustic instruments. Guitarists interested in Jazz Band must demonstrate some familiarity with jazz chords and will play amplified guitars in the jazz band and in guitar ensemble format.
For examples of music reflective of session levels for Cazadero guitarists please refer to Frederick Noad's Solo Guitar Playing Book I. Students in the Middle School Session should be able to play "Spanish Study" on page 49; students in the Junior High School Session should be able to play "Etude" by Ferdinand Carulli on page 83 of the same book. Students in the High School Session should be able to play the pieces starting on page 112, including the 'Canary Jig" by Sanz, pieces by de Visee, or the anonymous "Pezzo Tedesco" (from Chilesoti's collection).
Electives
A wide range of electives are offered during every session. Musical electives may include: music theory, composition, conducting, jazz improvisation, chamber ensembles, instrumental technique, choir*, and vocalization. Non-musical electives include: sports, dance, arts and crafts, and nature studies. (Click here for more information on the nature program). Class placement will be determined by camper preferences, audition results, and class size limitations. *All-camp Choir is a requirement rather than an elective in the Young Musicians and Middle School sessions. Campers are still able to choose an additional elective during these sessions.

CAMP
LIFE
ACCOMMODATIONS
Cazadero is a residential camp lasting 6 to 12 nights depending on the session. Campers sleep under the stars on platform decks in supervised groups assigned by age and gender. Clothes and instruments are stored inside the tents or dorm buildings. The camp is equipped with indoor showers, toilets, and changing rooms.
ATTENDANCE
Each of Caz's sessions, whether one week or two, is carefully designed to give campers a coherent and progressive musical experience. This process begins upon arrival at camp with auditions and ensemble assignments; it isn't over until the concert performances on the last day just before campers leave for home. Because of this, we require that all campers commit to attending a complete session from beginning to end. We cannot accommodate late arrivals or early departures; there are no exceptions.
TRANSPORTATION TO CAMP
The first day of each camp session begins at 11:30 in the morning. Parents can choose to drive campers to camp or to use the bus that Cazadero offers. This bus leaves our Berkeley office at 9:00 am (arrive by 8:30 for check in and loading) and gives campers a chance to start their camp experience even before their arrival at camp. The bus costs $30 and requires a reservation. There is no bus available for the return trip; parents should arrange to pick up their campers after the concert on the last day of camp.
FOOD
All meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner - are served buffet style in the camp's dining hall. Our fabulous cooks are happy to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions, just include your requests on your Health History Form . Pre-concert lunches are offered for visiting families and friends at Café Caz; be sure to make a reservation, as space is limited.
MEDICAL CARE
Resident nurses are on staff at all times to administer first aid and dispense camper's medications. Paramedic response is approximately five minutes away and both Sebastopol (45 minutes) and Santa Rosa (45 minutes) have major hospitals. A drop-in clinic in Guerneville (10 minutes) is available for the treatment of minor injuries. If your child has a special health condition, or you have other questions, please contact us.
CAMP STORE
Our camp store is stocked with an ever-changing array of supplies and treats. Campers may purchase CazWear logo clothing, replace their toothbrushes, or buy a treat for themselves during their free time. Campers can pay with cash or parents can set up a “store account” which their campers can then use throughout the session.

Similarly, campers attending more than one session in a single summer are also eligible for %10 off the price of their less expensive or second session.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Cazadero is committed to providing financial assistance to talented young musicians from all backgrounds. Scholarships are drawn from funds donated to Cazadero specifically for that purpose and are awarded based on the student's financial need and musical merit.
Generally, awards are one-half or less of the total tuition amount. In rare circumstances, a larger award is given when there is exceptional financial need. Some financial commitment is required from every family.

First, make sure to register.
• Complete the camper registration form.
• Check the box to request a scholarship application or click here to download one from the Caz website.

Cazadero makes every effort to accommodate most requests but there is no guarantee that a scholarship will be awarded.

Because Cazadero's program planning is determined by the number of enrollments received, we are unable to offer refunds after May 1st unless a replacement camper is found. If you must withdraw from a session, alert the office in writing as soon as possible. Cancellations made prior to March 1st are eligible for a refund less $140; cancellations made after March 1st but before May 1st are eligible for a refund less $340. www.insuretuition.com for details.
