Recovery Update, as of 2/11/2026
As we’ve shared, strong winds and heavy rains from the December 2025 winter storms caused significant damage to Cazadero. After a productive month of surveying and planning, Cazadero’s restoration roadmap is underway! We are proud of the collaboration between our staff, contractors, and the City of Berkeley to move forward with such care and expertise. We are full steam ahead for our 2026 season, and if we close our eyes, we can already hear the beautiful music echoing through the Redwood trees.
Although the damage to some of our beloved spaces is extensive, we’ve been relieved to discover that much of it can be addressed with simple replacements of planks of wood. Next week, teams will begin this critical work, and repairs to most of the breaks and punctures in the tent frames and decks should be completed soon.
Here are a few big steps that have already taken place:
- Fallen trees and debris has been removed so that structures, pathways, and roofs are accessible for repairs
- Contractors have visited the site to provide quotes and plans for utility repairs, and water has already been partially restored
- Roof punctures have been contained to prevent leaks
- The site of Tent #1 (our primary structural loss) has been cleared
- The camp truck is at the shop. Repairs will be completed soon.
While there is still important work ahead, we are feeling optimistic and grateful. Please help us spread the word that camp registration is open. We can’t wait to see you in the woods this summer!
Initial Report on the Impact of the December Storms, as of 1/5/2026
Following the recent December storms, Cazadero has sustained extraordinary damage due to high winds and heavy rains. Luckily the site was unoccupied at the time and no one was hurt.
The damage is extensive and requires urgent attention. We are working closely with our landlord, the City of Berkeley, and the insurance company to make a plan of action. We are determined to open as usual for our regular programs this year!
We have set up a picture gallery which you can link to here which will give you a better sense of the destruction. Here is a partial list of the damage and most urgent repair needs:
- Five massive trees fell, one of which is currently spanning the creek. This tree needs to be removed immediately or it could create a dam and flood the camp.
- Vital structures that were damaged: Tent Platform #1 in Family Camp has been completely destroyed. At least 20 additional tent frames and decks have been crushed and/or punctured. The pool dorm roof was punctured by a large branch.
- Other infrastructure damage: A falling branch impaled a kitchen shed, two of our propane tanks were severely damaged, and our camp truck was hit by falling debris.
- Utilities: After over a week, we finally have power and internet restored. Water has not been restored and will need a thorough assessment before it can be reactivated.
